What happened to him?
He was caught allegedly downloading thousands of articles from an online database JSTOR, he was going to be prosecuted and faced 35 years in prison. Swartz took his own life at the young age of 26 by hanging himself in his apartment in Brooklyn NY January 11 2013.
What are some of the reasons behind what happened?
I had no knowledge of who Aaron Swartz was or anything he had done in his life until know, I feel that there were a few reasons why he killed himself. The main reason being fear, he was scared to face the uncertainty of what was going to happen to him, someone so young being faced with the possibility of 35 years in prison for doing something he was great at. Considering most journals online are free I do not understand why it was such a big deal but then I do understand but still I am a little confused. Anyways he was physically, mentally and financially drained at this point in his life because of the justice system, they had drawn out this trial which could have happened a lot sooner. According to Swartz girlfriend at that time “The only private thing is your thoughts, and even they don’t feel safe anymore” (Taren Stinebrickner-Kauffman). Imagine trying to live a life like that. He put himself in a horrible position and had no idea how to get out.
What does this say about U.S. intellectual Property (IP) Law?
I guess this says that the U.S. is not messing around with people who do not abide by the laws set fourth in the cyber world. This shows that the unites states stands behind and will prosecute to the full extent of the law to protect peoples property and follow this IP law.
